Many people today, living amidst the complexities and chaos of the 21st century, find themselves on a journey searching for deeper truths in life. With an increasing reliance on technology and decreasing dependence on connection with each other, life can oftentimes feel lonely and isolated as if lived in a vast, unknown wilderness. With the desert of the Coachella Valley in Southern California as a backdrop, this book tells some of the stories of one man's life's journey as he seeks to find a way in the wilderness. The reader is invited into this fiercely beautiful desert to walk the wilderness trails of its barren terrain. In the shadows of the mountains, under a baking sun and brilliant moonlight skies, the author shares a mosaic of his reflections and personal stories, providing fresh new insights into some of the age-old questions about good and evil, sin and forgiveness, doubt and faith, hope and death. Throughout each of the stories told, the author, a spiritual pilgrim, himself, and life-long follower of the Christian path, weaves together the common threads of wisdom found in the many diverse faith traditions, that we might develop a shared language and serve as guides for each other. Regardless of whatever path you have chosen or are yet to choose, whether you are connected to a church or left a church, or were never part of any organized religion; this book is offered as a helpful guide for finding our way together in the wilderness. ~Amazon.com |

Crazy Christians: A Call to Follow Jesus by (Presiding Bishop-elect) Michael Curry. Click the image to order.
“We need some Christians who are as crazy as the Lord. Crazy enough to love like Jesus, to give like Jesus, to forgive like Jesus, to do justice, love mercy, walk humbly with God— like Jesus. Crazy enough to dare to change the world from the nightmare it often is into something close to the dream that God dreams for it. And for those who would follow him, those who would be his disciples, those who would live as and be the people of the Way? It might come as a shock, but they are called to craziness.” —from Bishop Curry’s “Crazy Christians” address to the 2012 General Convention of the Episcopal Church in Indianapolis

Anne Lamott is one of my favorite authors. The joy of the Gospel (a phrase the current Pope likes to use) shines through her works. I'm currently reading (and enjoying) Small Victories. ~Father Dan
The first book I read by Anne Lamott--Traveling Mercies—is still a favorite (you may want to read that one, too, if you haven't already) |
Joyce Rupp is a member of the Servite Sisters (The Servants of Mary), and an author sure to evoke a response from you. With many others I consider her a "spiritual midwife." ~dan
This book is useful for daily reading and meditation. It opens the many (and ancient) names of God. It is one of those books that you can open to any page and, if you're ready for surprise and delight, you will be rewarded. |
